ABOUT US

The UBC Kung Fu Association is the first and longest running martial arts social club at UBC. We offer three different styles of martial arts: Sanda, Wushu and Lion Dance. Here, we focus on learning the application and cultures of martial arts, as well as maintaining a healthy body and mind. This is also a place where students can gather at our monthly events to meet and create connections.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

WUSHU INSTRUCTOR
MIA
From a young age, Mia was captivated by the graceful yet powerful movements of Wushu, inspired by Wukong and action films she loved. Yet her crippling shyness kept her from pursuing it for years. It wasn’t until much later in life, after pushing past her fears, that Mia finally stepped into a wushu institution. She was instantly hooked, and dedicated several years training Wushu as a passionate hobby. When the art started fading in her hometown, Mia wasn’t ready to let it go. She took a bold leap and flew to China to train at Beijing Sport University as a foreign student for a year and a half, deepening her connection to wushu and the culture that shaped it. Her fave TV show is the animated Avatar the Last Airbender.

WUSHU ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR
JASON
Hi everyone, I’m Jason and this will be my 8th year at UBC Kung Fu. I was born and raised in Saskatoon, SK, and I am currently a law student here at UBC. I started practicing Wushu when I was 10 and since then, I’ve competed across multiple provincial and national competitions across Canada. I’m super excited to meet you all and hear about why you’re interested in Wushu!

Fun fact: I collect Funko Pop vinyl figures and bobble-heads!

LION DANCE INSTRUCTOR
JONATHAN
20 years ago, my parents gave me an ultimatum: either work some physical activity into your daily routine, or stop playing MapleStory on the computer altogether. What ensued was several long years of stance training, weapon training, form training, and finally, the training required to do the sacred art of throwing lettuce at people for good luck aka the Lion Dance. It’s been a fun ride of blood, sweat, tears and I’ve done my share of performances over the years, ranging from Chinese New Year celebrations, to weddings, to even a fair few parades! Join us, and hopefully I can impart the joy Lion Dance has brought me, to you.

SANDA INSTRUCTOR
LOGAN
Logan has been doing some form of kung fu for over a quarter of a century. His martial arts journey transitioned from traditional kung fu to wushu and sanda and eventually into MMA. He takes pride in seeing his students learn and grow as martial artists.
Fun fact: Logan was the -75 kg Canadian National Sanda Champion in 2015.
